After a fun, low key Rising Stars Indoor competition prior to a short break for Christmas the Athletics NI Coaching Team have prepared the content for Term 2.  Our mini competition in December allowed  150+ athletes to test their new skills under pressure and in line with their training objectives for Term 1 (starting positions and acceleration, long Jump take off  and introduction to push throw) they ran sprint races over 40-60m, long jumped from a 6 stride approach and ran short hurdle races over 40-60m.

Term 2 will increasingly allow athletes to focus on their upright running mechanics at maximum velocity but the multi events curriculum now also introduces the skill of pacing for endurance for the first time.  In addition there will be an increasing emphasis on single leg landings and jumps, perfecting the approach to the first hurdle and introducing the stance and alignment for a standing shot putt. In the 2nd half of this term just prior to Easter athletes will also be introduced to High Jump and Javelin progressions.

The full programme for Rising Stars beginners in weeks 13-18 is below and we welcome club coaches to come along and watch or get involved with delivery at any of our 8 weekly Regional Squads.  For an apprentice coaching position on one of the squads contact: laura@athleticsni.org  :
